Traffic Safety

On this page, you will find information that may help you become a better driver and will tell you about some of the programs that our Patrol Division/Traffic Safety Unit are working on.  Stop back here frequently to see what's new.  We will be adding tips and new traffic laws as they become available.

We are currently participating in one federally funded Traffic Safety Program.

Speed & Aggressive Driving Enforcement

Speeding on our federal, state, and local highways has reached a near epidemic stage.   Recent information from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation indicates that speeds on our state highways are averaging 10-15 miles per hour over the posted limits.  Those speeds are contributing to traffic fatalities which cost the taxpayers of the state millions of dollars.

Under a federal grant we will be putting more patrol units on the highways in our county and we will be enforcing the traffic laws. The focus area of this grant is USH 8, STH 86, USH 51 between USH 8 and STH 86, and the Town of Somo.  Why were these areas picked and being targeted?  Statistics show us that there is a higher percentage of serious injury crashes and fatalities based on the number of people living in this area.  USH 51 is a heavily traveled north/south route through Wisconsin and carries numerous vacationers, and tourists from all over the Midwest.  USH 8 is also a heavily traveled highway that runs east/west through the northern part of Lincoln County.  It's a main route between the UP of Michigan and western Wisconsin, and Minnesota.  We have adopted a ZERO tolerance policy for Speeding, Safety Belt and Child Passenger Safety violations, and Driving While Under the Influence of an Intoxicant or Drug. There will be no warnings!!!  We ask for your voluntary compliance with these very important safety issues.  Those who do not comply voluntarily will certainly meet one of  the officers on the highway who is out there enforcing the law.  Warnings are a thing of the past, citations will be issued.

Move Over Law

Wisconsin Statute 346.072

This law was created by the Wisconsin Legislature to help prevent injuries and deaths to our emergency service, and highway maintenance workers on our streets and highways.  Click on the statute to read about this very important law and your responsibilities as a driver.

Child Passenger Safety

Click above to go to the Wisconsin DOT website on Child Safety Seat Resources.  We have also enclosed a PDF file that you can download to your computer that contains a flow chart and description of the Booster Law in Wisconsin.  You can access that by clicking here; Booster Law

Please help us make our roads safer for you and your families by following these simple tips.

1. Always allow extra time for your travels.

2. Maintain a 3 second space between you and the vehicle in front of you (this is approx 225 ft. at 65 mph)

3. Give Motorcycles the room they deserve on the highway. They have as much right to be there as you do.

4. Stay alert; don't get behind the wheel if you're tired. Take a break.

5. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, GIVE SOMEONE WHO HASN'T BEEN DRINKING THE KEYS

6. Drive Defensively; try to maintain an area of protection by not crowding other motorists and not letting them crowd you. Remember: A Happy Motorist is a Safer Motorist.

Your voluntary compliance with the law can save lives, we can only help. Let's make this a partnership we can all live with!!!
