CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

Reverend Robert Smallman
The chaplain accompanies the sheriff or one of the deputies to notify area families in the case of an unexpected death and, if needed, remains with the family until other personal support arrives. Where appropriate he makes referrals to other sources of support (such as a family’s own pastor) or follows up with families at a later time. About once a month the chaplain rides along with one of the deputies -- to get acquainted with the officers and to become familiar with the responsibilities and stresses that go along with their job.
He is also available to personnel in the Sheriff’s Department who may need a neutral person in whom they can confide about personal and/or family issues. He is not a professional therapist, but he is available to help those going through a crisis or just needing someone “safe” to listen to them.
In addition to a regular Master of Divinity degree, Chaplain Smallman has a masters degree in Pastoral Counseling and Psychology. He has been in church ministry for over 35 years.
